Find Balance and Grace with Lord of the Dance Pose

Aug 22, 2026

Are you struggling to find balance and calm in your daily routine? Look no further than the Lord of the Dance pose! This beautiful and dynamic yoga posture not only strengthens and stretches your body, but also helps you cultivate grace and poise both on and off the mat. Whether you’re a seasoned yogi or just starting out, read on to discover how this powerful pose can elevate your practice and bring more harmony into your life.

Introduction to Lord of the Dance Pose

Lord of the Dance Pose, or Natarajasana, is a standing balance pose that requires both strength and flexibility. The name comes from the Hindu god Shiva, who is often depicted in art as dancing on top of a demon. This pose can be challenging for beginners, but with practice it can be a great way to improve balance and flexibility.

To begin, stand with your feet together and your arms at your sides. Take a deep breath in and slowly raise your right leg up behind you, keeping your pelvis level. As you exhale, lean forward from the waist and reach your right hand back to grab hold of your right ankle. If you can’t reach your ankle, grab hold of your calf or shin instead.

Once you have a good grip, press down into your left foot to lift your pelvis up and back as you continue to exhale. Keep pressing down through the left foot as you bring your right leg up and back, until the sole of your right foot is pressed against your left thigh. If possible, hook your right big toe over the left knee for added stability.

Now that you’re in the pose, take a few deep breaths and focus on maintaining your balance. To release, exhale as you slowly lower your right leg back down to the ground. Repeat on the other side .

How to Do Lord of the Dance Pose (Step-by-Step Instructions)

Assuming you are already in a standing position, begin by bending your right knee and bringing your right heel to your left groin. Next, reach your right arm around your back and take hold of your left ankle. If you can’t reach your ankle, simply grab a hold of your left calf. Pull your left leg up and over to the right side of your body as you simultaneously twist your torso to the left. Keep both feet firmly planted on the ground as you continue to look over your left shoulder. Hold this pose for 5-10 breaths before releasing and repeating on the opposite side.

Tips for Doing Lord of the Dance Pose Safely and Effectively

When attempting Lord of the Dance Pose, or any new yoga pose, it is important to practice safety first. Here are some tips for doing the pose safely and effectively:

1. Start by standing with your feet hip-width apart.

2. Bend your right knee and bring your right foot up to rest against your left inner thigh.

3. Reach your arms up overhead, then bend at the waist and reach for your left ankle with your right hand.

4. Use your left hand to support yourself on your left thigh. If you can’t reach your ankle, grab a strap or towel around your foot instead.

5. Slowly start to straighten your standing leg as you lift your left leg off the ground behind you. Keep both legs straight as you move into the full pose. only go as high as you feel comfortable – if you feel any pain in your back or knees, lower back down to the ground immediately.

6. To exit the pose, release the grip on your ankle and slowly lower both legs back to the ground, coming back into standing position.

Variations of Lord of the Dance Pose

There are many variations of Lord of the Dance Pose, each with its own benefits. To find the variation that’s right for you, start by exploring the different options and finding one that feels comfortable.

One variation is to bring your hands together in prayer position at your chest. This helps to open up the chest and shoulders, and can be a good option if you’re feeling tightness in those areas.

Another variation is to reach your arms up overhead, clasping your hands together. This helps to lengthen the spine and open up the hips. If you have lower back pain, this may be a good option for you.

You can also try placing your hands on your hips. This helps to ground the pose and gives you a sense of stability. If you’re feeling wobbly or off-balance, this may be a good option for you.

Lord of the Dance Pose is a unique and dynamic yoga posture that can help you find balance and grace in your practice. Not only will this pose improve your flexibility and strength, but it will also help bring awareness to how you move through space. By focusing on your breath as you hold the pose, you can achieve a sense of calmness and relaxation while still feeling energized. Whether used as part of a full sequence or just practiced on its own, Lord of the Dance Pose offers an opportunity to discover stillness amidst movement.
