Hanumanasana

Sri Hanuman, the humanoid “vanara”, companion and ardent devotee of Lord Sri Rama in the Hindu mythology embodies virtues like temperance, chastity, devotion, dedication, service, vigour, chivalry, intelligence and wisdom.

He is born of vanara princess Anjani and vanara king Kesari. Hanuman is also known as “Pawanputra” meaning the son of the Lord of the wind, “Vayudeva” as an important role was played by the Vedic God of Air/Wind in his birth.

Vayu(air) being of restless nature represents the restlessness of the human mind which is like a “vanara” constantly jumping from one place to another, unable to focus in itself. Though with constant diligent spiritual practice, the same inconsistent nature of the mind can be transformed into its true self introspecting nature.

Focusing in Lord Hanumana helps in channeling the mind into right direction by dispelling the darkness of ignorance, fear, avarice and lust, removing infirmity of mind and body, and bestowing wind like agility.

The Hanumanasana in the practice of yogasanas is inspired by Lord Hanumana’s giant leap from the southern tip of India to Sri Lanka in the great epic Ramayana. It is a great posture for opening and strengthening the pelvic area, toning leg muscles, stimulating and improving the functioning of abdominal organs and removing menstrual cramps in women.

The Purnahanumanasana if done properly stretches even the back, abdomen, arms and fingers. Its regular practice relieves stress and anxiety, and balances the nervous system.

Lord Hanuman is considered very important in Vedic astrology as well. Different rituals related to “Sankatmochana Hanuman”, are recommended for different yogas in astrology. Among others it is customary to worship Hanumana for calming down the malefic influences of Mars and Saturn in one’s chart. Tuesdays and Saturdays, and the colour bright orange are associated with Lord Hanuman.
